Jesus Lived

Easter is just behind for the year – while a few last chocolates still remain, I wanted to look at some of the very basics of the Christian faith. At the heart of the Easter message is the question of Jesus’ resurrection – but before we get to that, I would like first to make it as clear as possible that Jesus existed.

A very few historians still seek to cast doubt – but the overwhelming majority view is that, based on the evidence we have available to us, Jesus really did walk the earth some 2,000 years ago. Wikipedia is never the perfect source, but it’s not a bad place to start – this article on the historicity of Jesus has plenty of references if you want to read further. For instance, James Dunn stating that the baptism and crucifiction of Jesus “command almost universal assent” and “rank so high on the ‘almost impossible to doubt or deny’ scale of historical ‘facts’ they are obvious starting points for an attempt to clarify the what and why of Jesus’ mission”

If you’re interested, here’s Richard Dawkins accepting that Jesus existed in a debate with John Lennox.
